Hepatitis
11-22-08

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can be caused by viruses, chemicals, drugs, alcohol, inherited diseases, or the patient's own immune system. Most cases of acute hepatitis are due to viral infections: Hepatitis A,Hepatitis B,Hepatitis C,Hepatitis B with D and Hepatitis E.Some people with viral hepatitis have no signs of the infection. Other people may have light stools, dark urine, fatigue, fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, muscle aches and jaundice (skin and whites of the eyes turning yellow).

Certain types of sexual activity can spread the virus:

Hepatitis A can be transmitted from feces to mouth. You increase your risk  by having anal sex.

There is no specific treatment for hepatitis A. Usually, bed rest and adequate intake of fluids is recommended. Alcohol and any drugs which might affect the liver should be avoided for several months. Once you have recovered from hepatitis A, you have lifelong immunity to the virus, and there is no ongoing risk of liver damage. People with hepatitis A never become long term carriers of the virus - they are only infectious for a short time before and after the symptoms develop.

Hepatitis B can be spread through sex (oral, anal or vaginal) or through contact with an infected person's blood or body fluids. A mother can also pass it on to her newborn during childbirth.

After infection, most adults recover, develop antibodies to the virus and cannot spread the virus to others. A few adults retain the virus, become carriers, may infect other people, and have an increased risk of developing liver disease.

Transmission of Hepatitis C through sex is uncommon. It is spread by exposure to contaminated blood, contaminated needles, razors, tatoo and body-piercing tools.
About 80% of people infected with hepatitis C virus remain carriers, with the virus staying in their liver and bloodstream.  Long term carriers may develop liver problems years after infection.

Hepatitis D and E are rare in the U.S. Hepatitis D only causes an infection when hepatitis B is present and can make that infection more severe.
