Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease STD, with high rates of transmission. Once diagnosed, chlamydia can be easily cured by antibiotics. But the infection often is asymptomatic, and if left untreated, it can lead to infertility.
Currently, chlamydia infection is diagnosed by nucleic acid amplification tests, such as the polymerase chain reaction;
tests are expensive, technically complex and can take several days to get results.
Male tests have been relatively inaccurate and involved urethral swabs. Some men find this a painful and unpleasant procedure, particularly if there is urethral inflammation.
A special urethral swab is inserted 2 cm to 3 cm into the urethra and gently rotated, so that some urethral cells adhere to the swab.
Dr Helen Lee, from the University of Cambridge, one of the developers, said: "Horror stories about painful swabs have put men off getting tested for chlamydia, and other non-invasive tests are expensive, technically complex and take days to obtain the result.This has led to many cases of infection in men going undiagnosed and being transmitted to their female partners, with potentially more serious complications."
U.K. scientists have developed Chlamydia Rapid Test, it is designed to be used with a device for collecting urine from men called FirstBurst.
The test accurately detects chlamydia in men within an hour and is pain-free.
The rapid test produced a diagnostic high accuracy rate of 84.1%. and gave results within an hour.
Such availability of results means that male patients can be offered treatment while still at a clinic, the researchers said.
